![]() Whereas their first Montreal gig at Le National, a double bill that included New York noise pop duo Sleigh Bells, saw the crowd in discovery mode, this third outing was filled to the brim with Die Antwoord adepts. After over 20 minutes of orchestral music and religious chants, Die Antwoord’s unsung hero DJ Hi-Tek sauntered out to perform DJ Hi-Tek Rules before being joined by Yo-Landi Vi$$er and Ninja, clad in neon orange glow in the dark tracksuits, who jumped straight into Fok Julle Naaiers. As soon as they kicked off Wat Kyk Jy? though, you knew this was going to be an all outrager of a show. The crowd was already sold from the get-go and they didn’t even need to try, but the trio didn’t let up once during the hour and thirty minutes they performed. The peppered their performance with a couple of shouts of “MONTREALLLL” (funnily enough the first time they were in Montreal, Ninja made it clear he had no clue where he was) and a few French words, but the night was all about the beats and the rhymes. Two dancers jumped onstage during Wat Pomp and stayed for most of the night, which was a great addition but hardly necessary as the trio was entertaining enough on its own. The sheer energy they were giving kept the crowd jumping throughout the entire performance, especially during standout hit I Fink U Freeky. Over 2300 fans shouting “jump motherf*cker, jump motherf*cker, jump!” while jumping up and down is quite the sight to see.
